Pleasing Your Spouse

Whether you know it or not, part of my book selection routine often involves trying to impress and please my bride. I think that this time, it worked. Here is Ann's take on one of those attempts:

The Way We Garden Now: 41 Pick-and-choose Projects for Planting Your Paradise Large or Small by Katherine Whiteside came in to the store a couple days ago and the charming watercolor illustrations caught my eye right away.

After only a couple pages, I’m itching to get into my neglected garden and get it back in shape.

If you’ve been dreaming of transforming your yard into a beautiful garden this is a great guide. The projects in this book are not the kind that you drool over but never tackle because they are too elaborate or too costly. The author offers ideas for realistic and affordable projects that the average person with an average yard can accomplish. You will appreciate the understandable, step-by-step instructions.

The beginner can start by making a new garden bed, creating a compost pile, and gathering basic gardening tools. Once those first projects are finished, move on to planting perennials, annuals, shrubs, trees, vegetables, and herbs picking and choosing as the subtitle suggests to create a beautiful garden. The more accomplished gardener may be inspired to add some decorations, design some interesting containers, establish an asparagus bed, or construct some new paths.
